160 page Edinburgh book of City centre and surrounds - 160mm x 160mm for visitor market.
This has been a relatively solo project for a number of reasons to this point, though structurally it has been put together in such a way that it is easy to pass on to someone else should the opportunity present itself, or we decide to give it a push in the right direction.
This was a lockdown project which was created when our Tourism work had slowed down in 2020 and like the much of the country – we found ourselves with a little extra time on our hands for a while. Utilising photos taken over a couple year period we created a book product for the visitor market with bright imagery taken all across Edinburgh. We broke the city down into a series of sections and created illustrations and colour schemes for each which are then used as visual reference points throughout the publication to help flow, user navigation and help give each part of the city its own character and visual reference point. In reality the book is at an advanced conceptual stage and needs to be self-published or needs to find a publisher. It remains to be written – approximately 8000 words over the 160pp – which would effectively be glorified captions to the city imagery throughout. However the form, sizing and overall concept as well as page count has been designed for maximum impact for the most economical production route. It is a 160mm x 160mm format meaning it is a relatively compact publication design. Photographically and in design layout terms it is around 90-95% complete.
The challenge here was to invent the concept that would hit a certain Retail price point, so creating a balance between finding that retail value and production cost was interesting. The next challenge will be to find a publisher to pick it up who can see the same potential in it.
